We began our Maternal and Child Health Initiative in central New York in 2009. But before investing in any one area or strategy, we wanted to better understand what local agencies were providing assistance to pregnant women and their young children, the degree to which these agencies worked together to ensure adequate coverage and quality care, and the specific ways in which additional resources might be used to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of these efforts.
To help us in our planning process, we commissioned Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago to do an environmental scan of the region to identify needs, existing gaps and strengths in the maternal child health system and develop a set of recommendations we might adopt to improve birth outcomes for children in poverty.
