School-based health centers offer an effective alternative for providing primary care, mental and dental health care, preventative care, and chronic disease management for school-age children who lack access to quality care.
In 2006, the Buffalo and Syracuse City school districts began using the Centers for Disease Control Coordinated School Health Program to establish a framework for health planning in their districts.
Building on what we learned from this work, in 2009, we commissioned a report by the New York State Coalition for School Based Health Centers. This report on the school-based health center model in New York State highlights the history, benefits and current status of school-based health centers. We also asked the New York State Coalition to make recommendations for how we could advance the school-based health center model in our regions.
